The firm: English-speaking lawyers in Villanueva de la Cañada since 1993
Clavería Abogados was founded in 1993 in Villanueva de la Cañada, where it still has its only office. It is run by two lawyers who study every matter together.
Who we are
Pedro Pablo Clavería Ibáñez
Founding partner of the firm (1993).
ICAM no. 56.254Alberto Clavería Jiménez de Laiglesia
Partner. At the firm since 2006 and full time since 2013; admitted to the Bar in 2015. He leads the firm’s work on difficult estates and on accident compensation.
ICAM no. 120.820Both of us are members of the Ilustre Colegio de la Abogacía de Madrid (ICAM, the Madrid Bar Association), and we work as a standing team: both partners study every matter. There is no one lawyer who signs and another who does the work, and this is not a firm where you meet one lawyer at the first appointment and are then looked after by someone else.

How we work
We choose our cases. We study every case before taking it on, and we tell you frankly whether it has any prospect of success — even when the client insists on going to court. We would rather lose the instruction than put someone into proceedings whose ending we already know. For the same reason we do not promise results. What we do, from the first meeting, is explain what can reasonably be expected, how long it may take and what it may cost. If anything changes along the way, we say so. The first consultation is quoted for. It is not free: you will know in writing what we are going to do and what it costs before you instruct us on anything. That way you know from the outset what you will pay and why. You can look at the decisions we have obtained: they are anonymised and checked against the original decision.
What makes us different
The area we work in most is difficult estates: family companies within the estate, gifts made during the deceased’s lifetime, second marriages, a surviving spouse’s usufruct, and cuadernos particionales (the written division of an estate) that do not add up. It is the ground where there is the widest gap between doing the job properly and doing it quickly, and where a mistake in the arithmetic is measured in hundreds of thousands of euros. If your matter is an estate involving lifetime gifts, or one where the heirs are at odds, it is probably what we do best.
Languages and the area we cover
We work in Spanish, English, French and Portuguese, and we act for foreign clients with matters in Spain. In practice that means you can set out your case, read our advice and sign the papers in your own language, while the proceedings themselves run in Spanish before the Spanish courts, as the law requires. Our natural area is the west of Madrid — Villanueva de la Cañada, Majadahonda, Las Rozas, Boadilla del Monte, Pozuelo de Alarcón, Brunete, Villanueva del Pardillo and Quijorna — although we act anywhere in Spain where the matter justifies it.
Advertising and professional conduct
This firm is bound by the Estatuto General de la Abogacía Española (the statute governing the Spanish legal profession) and by the conduct rules of the Ilustre Colegio de la Abogacía de Madrid. That is why, on this site:
- We do not promise results and we give no success rates.
- The cases published here are anonymised and the decisions are final.
- Every reference to a result is accompanied by a notice that past results do not indicate future ones.
Questions we are asked about the firm
Can I deal with you entirely in English?
Yes. Meetings, correspondence and our written advice can all be in English, and the same applies to French and Portuguese. The proceedings themselves are conducted in Spanish before the Spanish courts, as the law requires, so anything that goes on the court file is drafted in Spanish and we explain it to you in your own language.
Who are the two lawyers?
Pedro Pablo Clavería Ibáñez, founding partner of the firm in 1993, ICAM no. 56.254, and Alberto Clavería Jiménez de Laiglesia, partner, ICAM no. 120.820, at the firm since 2006 and full time since 2013. Both are members of the Ilustre Colegio de la Abogacía de Madrid.
Is the first consultation free?
No. The first consultation is quoted for. Before you instruct us on anything you will know in writing what we are going to do and what it costs.
Do you act outside the west of Madrid?
Yes, where the matter justifies it. Our natural area is the west of Madrid, but we act anywhere in Spain. In inheritance matters the case is heard by the court for the deceased’s last address, not the heirs’ own, so living elsewhere is no obstacle.

The firm works with these Spanish universities.
